Socialism in Indian Politics

Socialism holds that the key means of production and distribution should be socially or state-owned, and that the state should actively reduce economic inequality. In India it has ranged from Soviet-style planning to a distinctly Indian socialism that fused economic equality with caste justice.

Economically, socialism favours state planning, public-sector enterprise, and regulation of private capital. India's first decades, through five-year plans, a large public sector, and bank nationalisation, were built on this template before the 1991 liberalisation shifted the consensus toward markets.

Indian socialism has often been inseparable from social justice. Thinkers like Ram Manohar Lohia tied economic equality to the dismantling of caste hierarchy, giving Indian socialism a flavour distinct from its European cousins.

Karl Marx is the global reference point, but India's socialist tradition is associated with Jawaharlal Nehru's Fabian-influenced planning, and with Ram Manohar Lohia, Jayaprakash Narayan, and Acharya Narendra Dev, who built a democratic-socialist current outside the communist parties.

Globally, socialism splits between the authoritarian state socialism of the former USSR and China and the democratic socialism of Western Europe, which works within elections and markets. India's mainstream socialism belonged to the democratic strand, even as the communist left drew on Marxist-Leninist models.

'Socialist' was added to the Preamble by the 42nd Amendment in 1976. The Left (CPI, CPI(M)) and the Lohiaite socialist lineage, visible today in parties like the Samajwadi Party and RJD, carry the tradition, though economic socialism has receded since liberalisation while its social-justice agenda endures.
