Tamil Nadu's current ruling party, the DMK is rooted in the Dravidian movement's emphasis on social justice, Tamil identity, federalism, and secularism. It has historically championed state autonomy and OBC reservation.

M.K. Stalin led the DMK to a decisive victory in the 2021 Tamil Nadu assembly election, ending the AIADMK's decade in power. Stalin had waited over 20 years in his father Karunanidhi's shadow before taking the party leadership in 2018.
When the central government moved to make Hindi the sole official language, Tamil Nadu erupted in violent protests. Over 70 people died. The agitation forced the government to retain English as an official language and strengthened Dravidian parties — particularly the DMK — which swept to power in 1967.
C.N. Annadurai founded the DMK in Madras after splitting from the Dravidar Kazhagam. The party championed Dravidian identity, Tamil language rights, and social justice, opposing Brahmin dominance and Hindi imposition. It came to power in Tamil Nadu in 1967 and has remained one of the two dominant parties in the state.
